Error code diagnosis list for Harley Davidson First chapter: how do I read out the errors:
Switch off the ignition at the bottom, switch on the handlebars in the operating position. 2. Press and hold the trip kilometer button, turn the ignition key to “Ignition”. Buttonlet go. The backlight comes on, the speedometer needle goes out, all of themWarning lights light up and the word “diag” appears. 3. Press the trip kilometer button once. The selection menu appears in the display"PSSPtb", P flashes 4. Each of these letters represents a different diagnostic area/memory area. WithYou can switch further using the trip kilometer button. P=ECM/ICM (ECM atinjection, ICM for carburetors), S=TSM/TSSM, SP=Speedometer(speed), T=tachometer (speed), b=ABS 5. If, for example, a bike does not have ABS installed, the b does not appear in theAdvertisement. On older bikes there are only three areas: P-S-C. The "C" standsthen for the “Instrument Module”, i.e. the instrument panel/speedometer unit. 6. To view a DTC from any of the above areas, press the button forheld down continuously for at least 5 seconds. If an error code is present,This now appears in the digital display. Now the button can be released againbecome. If no error code exists, "none" is displayed. With theThe error messages are forwarded using the trip kilometer button. 7. If you want to clear the error, hold down the trip kilometer button untiluntil “clear” is displayed. Here we present a comprehensive list of all Harley-Davidson Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) that are common and known.
These error codes are divided into four main categories:
B- (Body Codes)
P- (Power Train)
C- (chassis)
U group.
Each of these codes can be stored in different devices,
including the ECU (Engine Control Unit), the TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal Module/Security Module), the speedometer, the BCM (Body Control Module), the tachometer (if equipped) and the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System).
The B group includes all trouble codes related to the electrical circuit, including battery, ignition and starter. The “B” often appears similar to a “6” on the display.
The U group refers to all errors related to the EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) serial data connection. The C group contains error codes that are specific to the ABS (anti-lock braking system).
The P group covers all other error codes. With the introduction of CAN bus technology in bikes, for example. Starting with the Softail models from 2011, or Sportster from 2014, for example, the B group has been significantly expanded.
The BCM now provides detailed error messages regarding all switches, lights and indicators.
There is also some overlap between the P and C groups with the previously used codes.
In such cases, we have additionally highlighted the meaning of the error code from the time before the CAN bus.
Here are some specific error messages that may occur on Harley-Davidson motorcycles:tIP: This error code refers to the Bank Angle Sensor or Tilt Sensor. It indicates that the motorcycle is lying on its side or that the TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal Module/Security Module) is hanging loosely and at an angle on the cable, which can result in the motorcycle not starting.
BUS Er: This code signals a problem with the serial data bus, such as a short circuit, too low, too high voltage, or no contact.
no rSP: This error code indicates a malfunction of the tachometer/speedometer. It also appears if you try to read the error codes with the kill switch disabled. On Softail models with an aftermarket tachometer, “no rsp” will be displayed when the tachometer module is selected because a aftermarket tachometer is not powered by the serial data bus. SidE StAnd: This error occurs when the machine is turned off because the side stand is extended and a gear is engaged. V IN ER: This code represents a voltage error on the speedometer. Sometimes this error is also interpreted as V INVERT. The newer speedometers that also serve as tachometers can sometimes have problems with low on-board voltage during startup, especially if the battery is low. This can lead to memory content disruptions, which in turn can lead to various problems such as the machine not starting. If the motorcycle no longer starts, especially when it is warm, the following can help:Remove the positive battery terminal, wait 10 seconds and then reconnect the positive terminal. This measure can help reset electronic malfunctions and make the motorcycle startable again.
NO CAL: This error code means the speedometer is not calibrated. It typically occurs when the speedometer has been replaced or when a ThunderMax ECU is used. To resolve this error, the speedometer must be properly calibrated.VIN ERR: This code indicates that the vehicle identification number (VIN) in the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) does not match the VIN stored in the speedometer. This can occur when installing a new ECU or using a ThunderMax ECU. To correct this error, the correct VIN must be programmed into the device in question. These error codes and suggested solutions are specific to Harley-Davidson motorcycles and address common problems related to the motorcycle's electronics and programming.

Radio diagnosticsThe following radio diagnostic error codes (B2006-B2027) are generated by the radio itselfdisplayed. To display this, first press the "Eject" button on the CD unit. While you hold down any two keys (soft keys 1 to 6), you switch the ignitionto a.
The diagnostic code will then appear on the radio display. The display then showsthe options Diag Test with which you can see the errors, AVC with which you can see themSpeed Pulse or the J1850 provides data with which the speed-dependent volumeworks and Calibr., where you get the calibration data I, J, V, H. Query the error codes via the speedometer
The error codes can be read via the speedometer display. First off with the carburetorsYear of manufacture 2004. But also via programs such as Datamaster together with the TTS Mastertune. Here is the procedure:
1. Switch off the ignition at the bottom, switch on the handlebar in the operating position.2. Press and hold the trip kilometer button, turn the ignition key to “Ignition”. Buttonlet go. The backlight comes on, the speedometer needle goes out, all of themWarning lights light up and the word “diag” appears.3. Press the trip kilometer button once. The selection menu appears in the display"PSSPtb", P flashes4. Each of these letters represents a different diagnostic area/memory area. WithYou can switch further using the trip kilometer button. P=ECM/ICM (ECM atinjection, ICM for carburetors), S=TSM/TSSM, SP=Speedometer(speed), T=tachometer (speed), b=ABS5. If, for example, a bike does not have ABS installed, the b does not appear in theAdvertisement. On older bikes there are only three areas: P-S-C. The "C" standsthen for the “Instrument Module”, i.e. the instrument panel/speedometer unit.6. To view a DTC from any of the above areas, press the button forheld down continuously for at least 5 seconds. If an error code is present,This now appears in the digital display. Now the button can be released againbecome. If no error code exists, "none" is displayed. With theThe error messages are forwarded using the trip kilometer button.7. If you want to clear the error, hold down the trip kilometer button untiluntil “clear” is displayed. In the newer models with a CAN bus system, such as the Breakout, there is a change in the error query process that differs from older models. One of the most noticeable innovations is that there is no longer a traditional ignition switch
The function of the ignition switch on these models is carried out by the ignition interrupter on the right switch.
A little hint:
And since the emergency comes sooner than you think, just practice how to skip the error codes. Then you'll be prepared when it comes to it.
Flash codes of older models from 2000
Here are also the error codes (flash codes) of the older models from the 2000s with a carburetor.
They also had a small ECU installed that didn't display errors as plain text, see above, but only as flash codes
The flash codes can be read out on the OBD connector via a data link cable and end device.
We have the Data Link cables in our range: click here for the articles
